Chargalytics Research & Press Access — Terms

Version 2026-10-10 · Effective from the date it is published at chargalytics.com/research-access/terms/

These terms govern free Research & Press access to Chargalytics, operated by Incremental AS, Oslo, Norway ("we", "us"). They add to our general Terms & Conditions. If the two conflict, these terms apply to your Research & Press account.

You accept these terms by ticking the box on the application form. We record which version you accepted and when.

1. Who can apply

Research & Press access is for:

  • researchers at universities and research institutes;
  • students writing a thesis, dissertation or other supervised academic work;
  • journalists, staff or freelance;
  • non-profit organisations (NGOs) working in the public interest.

Access is personal. One account belongs to one named person and cannot be shared, transferred or used by colleagues. Everything you tell us in your application must be true. If your role or institution changes during your access period, tell us at [email protected].

2. What you get

For 12 months from approval, you get:

  • the Chargalytics Analytics plan: the charging map with live status and usage history, country dashboards, the CPO benchmark, ChargiPedia company profiles and the personalised newsletter;
  • the Research API: programmatic access to a defined set of aggregated statistics, for example country, region and operator level figures and time series. The endpoints available are listed in the API documentation.

Not included: the Projects planning tool, file exports from the web application, and our commercial Data API. We never provide raw data: no charging session records, per-charge-point histories, raw source feeds or tariff tables, through the platform, the API or on request.

3. Non-commercial use only

You may use Chargalytics for:

  • academic research and teaching;
  • journalism, including articles published by commercial news outlets;
  • the public-interest work of a non-profit organisation, such as policy analysis, advocacy and reports.

You may not use it for:

  • consulting, advisory or paid analysis for clients;
  • work commissioned, sponsored or paid for by a commercial party, including charge point operators, vehicle or equipment makers, energy companies and investors, unless that work is genuinely independent academic research published openly;
  • the internal business decisions of any company;
  • building, training, testing or improving a product, dataset or model that competes with Chargalytics or is offered to others.

If you aren't sure whether your work counts as non-commercial, ask us before you start: [email protected]. Commercial use needs a paid plan.

4. Credit

Every published chart, table, figure, map or finding that uses our numbers must carry this credit, close to the material it applies to:

Source: Chargalytics (chargalytics.com)

This applies whether the numbers came from the web application or the Research API, and whether you show them as published or use them in your own calculations. In academic work, also cite Chargalytics in your references, with the date you retrieved the data.

We may list the title, author and outlet of published work that credits us on our website, as examples of where our numbers have been used. Tell us if you would rather we didn't. We welcome a link to your published work.

5. What you may publish, and what you may not share

You may publish the results of your work: charts, tables, figures, quoted numbers and analysis, with the credit in section 4.

You may not:

  • publish, share, sell or give anyone the data you retrieve from Chargalytics as a dataset, in whole or in substantial part, including in a public data repository, as supplementary material or with colleagues outside your access;
  • systematically extract or copy the platform's content, other than through the Research API within its limits;
  • combine data from Chargalytics with other data to reconstruct per-site, per-charge-point or per-session information, or to identify any person;
  • remove or hide the credit, or present our numbers as your own data collection.

If a journal or funder requires a data availability statement, say that the data was obtained from Chargalytics under licence and that requests should be made to us. If you need to deposit a limited derived dataset to replicate a published result, ask us first. We consider reasonable requests and give permission in writing.

6. Research API rules

  • Your API key is personal. Keep it secret and do not share it, embed it in public code or let anyone else use it. If it leaks, revoke it in your account and create a new one.
  • Stay within the request limits shown in your account and the API documentation. Do not try to get around them, for example with several keys or accounts.
  • Do not scrape the web application. If you need data automatically, use the API.
  • We may change, add or withdraw endpoints, fields and limits, and may pause the API for maintenance. We log API use to run the service and enforce these terms.

7. Accuracy

Chargalytics combines data from many public and commercial sources, processes it and estimates where data is missing. Figures may be delayed or incomplete, may contain source errors, and may be revised. The service is provided "as is", without any promise that it is fit for a particular purpose. You are responsible for checking whether our figures suit your purpose and for the conclusions you draw from them. Our methodology notes, and our team at [email protected], can help.

8. Duration, renewal and ending access

  • Access lasts 12 months from approval. We email you about a month before it ends. To renew, apply again.
  • We may suspend or end your access straight away if you break these terms, if your application turns out to be untrue, or if your API use puts the service at risk. Where we reasonably can, we will tell you why.
  • We may change or end the Research & Press programme with 30 days' notice by email.
  • You can close your access at any time by emailing [email protected].

When access ends, your API key stops working. You may keep publishing work you produced during your access, with the credit. Delete the data you retrieved through the API, apart from what you need to support work you have already published or that is under review.

9. Liability

Research & Press access is free. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss arising from your use of Chargalytics or from relying on its figures, including indirect or consequential loss. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

10. Your personal data

We use the information in your application to check your eligibility, including whether your email address belongs to the institution you name, and to run your account. We process it as described in our Privacy Policy. We keep your application for as long as your access lasts and for a limited period afterwards, so we can handle renewals and prevent misuse.

11. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. Each version has a date. If we make a material change during your access period, we email you at least 30 days before it takes effect. If you don't accept the change, you can end your access. New and renewed access always uses the current version.

12. Law and disputes

These terms are governed by Norwegian law. Disputes are handled by the Norwegian courts, unless mandatory law requires otherwise.

If these terms are translated, the English version governs.
