Research & Press

Research API

Version 1 · for Research & Press accounts · governed by the Research & Press terms

What it is

The Research API gives Research & Press accounts programmatic access to aggregated statistics on public EV charging: the installed network and its power mix by country, US states, and monthly charging use by country and by charge point operator. Everything is processed and aggregated. It never returns a single station, charge point or session, coordinates, live status or tariffs.

Not a Research & Press member yet? Apply for free access.

Keys and authentication

Create a personal key on your account page. It is shown once, so copy it when you create it; we only keep a fingerprint. Send it with every request:

Authorization: Bearer cgr_…

Keys are personal: keep them out of public code and notebooks. If a key leaks, revoke it on the account page and create a new one. Keys stop working when your Research & Press access ends or is paused.

Call the API from a script or server with a normal HTTP client (curl, Python requests, R httr). Our edge blocks clients that send no User-Agent, including bare Python urllib.

Limits

  • 1,000 requests a day per account, counted across all its keys (the day resets at midnight, Oslo time).
  • 60 requests a minute per key.
  • At most 2 active keys per account, and at most 36 months per call.

Over a limit you get 429 with a Retry-After header. Every successful response carries X-RateLimit-Limit and X-RateLimit-Remaining for the day. The figures change at most daily, so cache what you fetch.

Responses

Every response is JSON with data and meta. meta always carries:

  • credit: the credit line, Source: Chargalytics (chargalytics.com). Put it next to anything you publish from these figures (terms, section 4).
  • retrieved_at: when you fetched the figures (UTC). Cite it in academic work.
  • upstream_attribution: the public sources and licences behind the figures. Please name them in your methods or data section.
  • coverage_pct and excluded_sources: we include only sources whose licence allows these aggregates to be shared. Coverage is their share of all stations we know in the country; below 80% a country is not served.
  • notes: definitions and method changes that matter when you compare months.

Errors look like {"error": {"code": "…", "message": "…"}} with a matching HTTP status: 400 bad parameter, 401 missing, invalid or revoked key, 403 access ended, 404 country or month not available, 429 rate limit.

What is never shown

  • Any group of fewer than 10 sites. Smaller operators are combined as “Other operators”, and if that group would itself be smaller than 10 sites, the smallest named operators join it.
  • The current month: only complete months are served.
  • Per-station, per-charge-point or per-session data, coordinates, live status, tariffs, raw source fields, location scores and forecasts.

Endpoints

Base URL https://www.chargalytics.com/api/research/v1. All are GET. country takes an ISO 3166 code, two or three letters (NO or NOR). Months are YYYY-MM.

EndpointParametersReturns
/countries—The countries served, with station count, coverage, latest complete month, sources and attribution; and the countries withheld, with the reason.
/countrycountryInstalled stations and charge points, DC share, charge points by power band (AC ≤ 22 kW, AC > 22 kW, DC < 50, 50–149, 150–349, ≥ 350 kW), and fast-charging use in the latest complete month.
/country/monthlycountry, from, to (default: the last 12 complete months)Per month, for fast charging (CCS + CHAdeMO) and Type 2 AC: sites and charge points with data, charging minutes, sessions, average session length, minutes and sessions per charge point per day, occupancy %. Fast charging also splits minutes into CCS and CHAdeMO.
/operatorscountry, month (default: latest), type = fc (default) or acThe operator benchmark for one month: the same figures per operator, plus share of charging minutes and of charge points.
/operators/monthlycountry, from, to, typeThe operator benchmark as a series, one row per month and operator.
/regionscountry=USUS states: installed stations, fast-charging stations and DC charge points.

Example

curl -H "Authorization: Bearer $CHARGALYTICS_KEY" \
  "https://www.chargalytics.com/api/research/v1/operators?country=NO&month=2026-09"
import os, requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://www.chargalytics.com/api/research/v1/country/monthly",
    params={"country": "SE", "from": "2026-01", "to": "2026-09"},
    headers={"Authorization": "Bearer " + os.environ["CHARGALYTICS_KEY"]},
    timeout=60,
)
r.raise_for_status()
body = r.json()
print(body["meta"]["credit"])        # Source: Chargalytics (chargalytics.com)
for m in body["data"]["months"]:
    print(m["month"], m["fast_charging"] and m["fast_charging"]["occupancy_pct"])

The first call for a country can take a few seconds while we assemble its figures; later calls that day are fast.

Countries available now

Germany (DE), United States (US), France (FR, 99.9%), United Kingdom (GB, 99.8%), Belgium (BE, 84.1%), Spain (ES), Canada (CA), Switzerland (CH), Sweden (SE, 99.6%), Denmark (DK, 86.7%), Poland (PL, 99.5%), Norway (NO, 99.9%), Finland (FI), Australia (AU), Lithuania (LT, 94.5%), Slovenia (SI, 99.8%), Bulgaria (BG), Romania (RO), New Zealand (NZ), Iceland (IS), Cyprus (CY, 99%), Liechtenstein (LI).

A percentage is the coverage where a source had to be left out. Other countries are added as their source licences are confirmed; /countries lists the ones withheld and why.

Using the figures

You may publish results with the credit line; you may not republish the data you retrieve as a dataset. The full rules, including what to write in a data availability statement, are in the Research & Press terms. Questions: [email protected].
